LETTER FROM THE ASSOCIATION OF WORLD CITIZENS
TO SECRETARY GENERAL KOFFI ANNAN
April 6, 2002
Dr. Kofi Annan
Secretary General
United Nations
Dear Dr. Annan:
What is happening in the Middle
East today isbarbaric and unspeakable. Israeli military action
against the Palestinians is not only an act of "war"
as the Prime Minister has declared, but it blatantly violates
basic international law. It is state terrorism, which
should be denounced by the worldcommunity, especially the United
Nations.
If unchecked, the violence may
escalate into a larger war and therefore, it must be stopped
immediately. As the Secretary General, representing the voice
and conscience of 6.1 billion people, we urge that you denounce
the barbaric acts of violence of the Israel Government, as well
as the barbaric acts of suicide bombings by Palestinians.
The Security Council should authorize
you to send peacekeeping forces to negotiate an end to the Israel
assault, and to protect Palestinians and Israelis alike. Then,
let all the parties concerned bring a peaceful solution to the
crisis, which has claimed thousands of lives, especially women
and children, and resulted in the squandering of the billions
of dollars needed so urgently for development.
Only the United Nations can truly
act as an honest broker between the two parties, and thus establish
a just formula for a peaceful co-existence in the Middle East
so that both the communities-Jews and Arabs--prosper and build
a culture of peace.
And at some point in this process
the City of Jerusalem should be designated a world city by the
UN General Assembly, under the day-to-day governing jurisdiction
of the UnitedNations. This may be the only way to resolve this
contentiousissue, making Jerusalem a city free for Arabs, Jews,
and all the religions to live in peace.
Very sincerely,
Rashmi Mayur, Phd.
