Dear Colleagues,
Below is my letter on behalf of the Association of World Citizens
to the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation in
Gaza, a situation of which everyone is aware. It is not clear
what as NGOs we can do, but things may grow more difficult and
we should watch closely to see what can be done. With best wishes,
Rene Wadlow

Re: Gaza
Madame High Commissioner:
At a time of violence and high tension
in Gaza, the Association of World Citizens appeals to you to
articulate the concern of the international community for the
respect of human rights and the rule of law.
There are continuing dangers of the violation
of fundamental human rights.
The structures of governance have been
weakened.
Many in Gaza look to the United Nations
for protection and help in this time of danger. There are numerous
basic human needs which can be met only by external assistance.
Thus, I am sure that your efforts with other members of the
UN family will be much appreciated.
As the UN appeal of 13 June notes, two
UN staff have already been killed in the violence, a further
indication of the need to protect all humanitarian workers in
Gaza.
To the extent that NGOs can be of service
in support of your efforts, I am sure that you can count upon
us.
Respectfully yours,
Rene Wadlow,
Representative to the UN-Geneva of The
Association of World Citizens
