NEW NUCLEAR WEAPONS CAMPAIGN
The World Citizen Award to the
man who averted nuclear war has initiated a new drive to rid
the world of nuclear weapons. The Association of World Citizens
(AWC) worked closely with Friends of Earth Australia Nuclear
Weapons Campaign, War & Peace Foundation, and other anti-nuclear
group to produce a resolution addressed to the 60th session of
the United Nations. The resolution specifically calls for the
removal of all U.S. and Russian nuclear warheads from "hair-trigger"
alert to eliminate the daily threat of a nuclear war starting
by an accidental missile launch or miscalculation.
The current phase of this project
is getting endorsements of prominent peace organizations and
influential individuals. Nearly 100 organizations have signed
on as of August 1, and the Dalai Lama is the latest of the Nobel
Laureates to send in their endorsement. This process will continue
until the resolution, with the list of endorsers, is presented
to the 60th session of the UN General Assembly when it meets
in New York in September.
One early victory in this campaign
is a resolution passed by the Australian Parliament on June 23.
2004. To read the resolution go to the Recent Articles page and
click on "Australian
Parliament Resolution." This entire project is the result
of the publicity coming from the World Citizen Award presented
to Stanislav Petrov in Moscow on May 21, 2004. See the article

Initiates New Campaign to De-Alert Nuclear Weapons"
