2001 PEACE ASSEMBLY IN TAIWAN ATTENDED
BY FIVE NOBEL PEACE LAUREATES

The 2001 Global Peace Assembly held in Taipei, Taiwan from August 15-16 was attended by Nobel Peace Laureates, scholars, peace activists and NGOs from around the world.

The peace conference was initiated by Lu Hsiu-lien, Vice President of the Republic of China, Taiwan. Vice President Lu invited the Association of World Citizens (AWC) to be one of the sponsors for this event.

The five Nobel Peace Laureates attending the conference were Dr. Joseph Rotblat, Oscar Arias Sanchez, Lech Walesa, Jody Williams, and Frederik W. de Klerk.

Some 40 delegates spoke in the panel sessions, with most of the discussion centering on the crisis between Taiwan and mainland China, with many proposals offered to resolve this problem.

In addition to Dr. Rotblat, other speakers dealing with the larger global issues included, AWC President Douglas Mattern. AWC Advisor Dr. Terrence Paupp, and AWC Vice President Dr. Rashmi Mayur. Their focus was on ending the militarism that dominates political policy, and redirecting the wasted funds on building weapons toward resolving our common global problems, from environmental issues to the eradication of poverty.

All were adament that nuclear weapons must be abolished in the shortest possible time, and that all peace activists must join together to stop the development of President George W. Bush's "son of Star Wars" anti-missile project, officially know as National Missile Defense (NMD).

They emphasized that the anti-missile scheme is not really a defensive weapon, but rather the first step in the militarization and the weaponization of space. The biggest advocate for this criminal waste of our resources is the military/industrial complex. The prospect of weapons in space envisions unending profits for these "merchants of death."

NMD, and futuristic space weapons that are now on the drawing boards, must be stopped before it is too late! Otherwise, the "final frontier" will not be the starting point for the future exploration of our solar system and space beyond, but rather just the final frontier of military madness for humankind.

The 2001 Peace Assembly was successful and well organized. More than 10,000 people attended an outdoor program featuring the Nobel Laureates and wonderful entertainment.
